Are you a parent of young children? If so, then you’ve probably wondered whether or not to teach your kids about the tooth fairy. The story of the tooth fairy rewarding children for lost teeth dates back as far as the beginning of the 20th century and it has stuck around. Sure, it’s fun and sort-of traditional, but in modern society, do we really need it? However, teaching your children about the tooth fairy can actually be highly beneficial for them. Here’s why:

  1. It promotes good oral hygiene – It’s important to instill good oral hygiene practices into your children from a young age. This includes not only brushing their teeth, but using floss and kid-safe mouth wash, too. Tell your children that they will only be compensated for their lost teeth if their teeth are in tip-top condition. The better condition, the more they are worth. You’ll be guaranteed to have your children rushing to the bathroom to brush their teeth! Furthermore, you will also be teaching them good oral hygiene habits that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

  1. It prevents children from being afraid of the dentist – Believe it or not, many adults are still scared of the dentist. With all of the strange equipment, the noise, and weird sensations that accompany a dental visit, it’s no wonder that some kids might be scared – and adults with this problem often never got over it as children. The tooth fairy is fun and can help children feel that visiting their local Georgia dentist is an adventure. Every time your child loses a tooth, they will want to run to the dentist’s office to proudly show off their new smile!

  1. It lets kids be kids – One of the best parts about being a kid is that ordinary things can seem exciting and magical. Sure, as an adult, the whole tooth fairy concept may seem silly, but think back to when you were a child. You probably got a kick out of the tooth fairy, too! You probably even believed that it flew into your room while you were sleeping every time you lost a tooth just to compensate you for your loss. Kids are gullible, are creative, and have vivid imaginations. However, it rarely lasts a lifetime. Enjoy this special time with your children now, while you still can.

Dentistry for Children is a strong believer in the tooth fairy. In fact, we love the tooth fairy so much that we created the Tooth Fairy Connect program! This program features a storybook that follows Luna the tooth fairy’s adventures. In addition, Luna also visits many schools and organizations to perform a special puppet show to further educate children about the best dental hygiene practices.
